The Mojave Experiment

Windows Vista

Focus groups in San Francisco were recently part of a Microsoft experiment. With all of the hate for Windows Vista, what if people used Vista but didn’t know it was Vista…would they still hate it?

The answer? No.

Participants of the focus groups were all Windows XP users and they were told that they would be testing out a new operating system called “Mojave”. More than 90 percent of the participants gave positive feedback on their experience with “Mojave”, with one user exclaiming “oh wow” while using it.

When each of the groups were finished they were told that they had been using Windows Vista all along, to which they replied “Vista sucks”. No, not really. =)

Something this illustrates is the public perception problem Vista has and while Microsoft has an uphill climb to change that perception, at least this research shows that it’s possible.

As hard as it was for many to believe, that’s what they claimed and now they’ve released a video to prove it.

Keep in mind that the Mojave lovers in the video aren’t your typical geek, some with years of Windows hate lodged firmly in their mind. They’re normal computer users that hated Vista because everyone else did.

Pretty interesting. To see the video for yourself check it out at Mojave Experiment.

Threat of seizures in Zimbabwe

Zimbabwe’s troubled business leaders recently summoned Indigenisation and Empowerment Minister Paul Mangwana to seek clarification over renewed government threats to seize foreign-owned enterprises.

Informed sources told this reporter that representatives of the country’s bruised business community on Monday sought Mangwana and his permanent secretary Ozias Hove’s explanations following reports that President Robert Mugabe’s administration had compiled a list of close to 500 foreign owned companies targeted for a hostile takeover.

The sources said the meeting took place at the Confederation of Zimbabwe Industries (CZI) offices in the capital city. Mangwana and Hove reportedly reassured the business leaders that any takeover of companies would be carried out in an orderly manner.

CZI President Callisto Jokonya confirmed the meeting took place.

“We were seeking clarification and Mangwana told us that in no uncertain terms that the implementation of the takeover will be done professionally. As CZI we are not opposed to indigenisation,” Jokonya said.

Zimbabwe’s Parliament recently passed a controversial law which compels all foreign owned enterprises operating in the country to surrender more than half their shares to local citizens in a programme aimed at empowering the country’s marginalised citizens.

President Mugabe recently renewed threats to seize the foreign owned companies, particularly British owned ones after London refused to recognise his victory in last month’s single candidate presidential election which he won after Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) leader Morgan Tsvangirai pulled out citing political violence against his sympathisers.

Meanwhile, the business leaders hailed the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between Mugabe, MDC leader Morgan Tsvangirai and Arthur Mutambara, the leader of a breakaway faction of the MDC. They said such negotiations would help end the country’s agonising economic crisis.

“This is indeed a historic event which should augur well for our nation and everyone who has the best interests of Zimbabwe at heart applauds this calibre of statesmanship,” said Jokonya.

New York subway romance

Posted by Inspector Gadget | 4:17 PM | | 0 comments »

New York subway romanceCANBERRA (Reuters) - A modern-day love story of a man spotting the girl of his dreams across a New York subway train and tracking her down over the Internet has failed to have a fairytale ending with the relationship over.

For Web designer Patrick Moberg, then 21, from Brooklyn, it was love at first sight when he spotted a woman on a Manhattan train last November. But he lost her in the crowd so he set up a website with a sketch to find her — www.nygirlofmydreams.com.

Unbelievably in a city of 8 million people, it only took Moberg 48 hours to track down the woman, with his phone ringing non-stop and email box overflowing as usually cynical New Yorkers took sympathy on the subway Romeo and joined his hunt.

The mysterious brunette was named as Camille Hayton, from Melbourne, Australia, who was working as an intern at the magazine BlackBook and also lived in Brooklyn. One of her friends spotted the sketched picture on the Web site and recognized her.

But after finding each other, appearing on TV and getting international press, the couple took their romance out of the public eye, with Moberg closing down the Web site and with both refusing to making any more comments — until now.

Hayton told Australian newspaper The Sunday Telegraph that she dated Moberg for about two months but it just didn’t work out.

“I say we dated for a while but now we’re just friends,” Hayton, now 23, told the newspaper. “It’s really nice that people embraced the story. It is part of my life now.”

Hayton said she is still recognized about three times a week on the streets of Manhattan as “that girl”‘ and the question is always the same: “So what happened?”

“I think the situation was so intense that it bonded us,” she said, adding it “bonded us in a way that you could mistake, I guess, for being more romantic than it was. I don’t know. But I wanted to give it a go so I didn’t wonder what if, what if?”

Hayton told The Sunday Telegraph that she is enjoying single life in New York, keeping busy with acting classes, working in two vintage clothing stores and as a waitress.

Last week she had a small role as a waitress in the long-running daytime soap “As The World Turns” and last year she was an extra in a “blink and you’d miss it” scene in the hit movie “Sex And The City.”

“I just can’t believe it happened. It feels like a long time ago,” said Hayton.

Moberg, however, was still refusing to comment on the relationship.

“We’ve decided not to do any more press,” he wrote in an e-mail to Reuters.

Joker arrested in Michigan

JokerTHREE RIVERS, Mich. - Police in Michigan have arrested a man who they say tried to steal posters and other items related to the new Batman movie from a cinema lobby while dressed up as the Joker.

Detective Mike Mohney said Monday 20-year-old Spencer Taylor of Three Rivers has been booked for investigation of larceny and malicious destruction of property.

Taylor is scheduled to be arraigned Aug. 5 in St. Joseph County District Court.

There is no telephone listing under his name in the Three Rivers area.

Mohney says officers who were dispatched early Sunday to the theater arrived to find employees restraining a man wearing a purple suit, a green wig and face paint in the style of Batman’s nemesis in “The Dark Knight.”

Suicide instructions on Wikipedia

Posted by Inspector Gadget | 4:02 PM | , , | 0 comments »

WikipediaWikipedia, the online “free encyclopedia” written and edited by its users, now includes dozens of detailed suicide methods with descriptions of ways in which people can mutilate or kill themselves.

The following are among such techniques described in vivid detail: beheading, cutting oneself, drowning, suffocation, electrocution, use of explosives, hanging, vehicular impact, jumping from bridges and towers, drug abuse, inhaling and ingesting poisons, suicide by fire, stabbing, shooting, starvation and suicide attack.

When WND contacted a representative of the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline, she said, “A site detailing the different methods someone could use to kill themselves could definitely be harmful to the public.”

However, Jay Walsh, head of communications for the Wikimedia Foundation, said the organization does not take responsibility for editing the content of its pages.

“The Wikimedia Foundation operates the software and maintains the servers that power Wikipedia; however the entire Wikipedia project is maintained exclusively by volunteers,” he told WND. “No paid staff make edits to content, rather members of the volunteer community will add or remove information at their discretion and within the auspices of the editorial pillars of Wikipedia, which generally include: noncensorship, neutral point of view, no original research and, to a similar extent, addressing the question of ‘notability.’”

We are scientists on tour

We Are Scientists’ new video for third single “Impatience” is now up.

If you are familiar with We Are Scientists’ excellent news archives, Keith’s first glance at Chris’s ear should be sufficient foreshadowing for what is about to occur in the video. Although that kills the “big surprise”, I was undaunted by being given what I expected and watched more until I found myself chuckling at Keith pulling out his shoe to beat the shit out of Chris; then of course, Chris’s antics properly pulled me to feelings of endearment when his charade-winning gestures cried:

“yo d00d I’m not gonna shred ur hair apart lez take pixx cause liek, this only happens once a month”

Adam and Max busting in as police officers (Keith merely had to send a telekinetic message fraught with emotional strife for them to take action) put the cheese on the cornball. It’s not my favorite video (still a big fan of Inaction), but I am glad to know that Keith and Chris are making their dreams come true with making parody b-movie themed music videos.
